Indo-China Relations: India China relations are also known as Sino-Indian relations which refers to bilateral relations between the Republic of India and the People’s Republic of China. China and India are the two most populous and fastest-growing economies in the world. The economic and bilateral ties have grown significantly between both countries. It is dated back to ancient times. The silk route not only served as a major trade route but was also an important route to bring Buddhism into India.

Border Disputes and Imbalance in Trade

  • However, there are some irritants that have caused the strain in the relations of the two nations from time to time. Most important among them being border disputes and imbalance in bilateral trade. The border dispute has led to 3 military conflicts in 1962, 1967 and in 1987.
  • In early 2017, the two countries clashed on the Doklam plateau along the Sino- Bhutanese border. However, since the 1980s both countries have strengthened bilateral and economic ties.
  • Despite growing economic ties between both the countries the trade imbalance has been heavily in favour of China. Indian markets are flooded with Chinese goods in electric and consumer sectors adversely affecting the growth in these sectors.
  • Additionally, the two countries have failed to resolve border disputes leading to Chinese military incursions into Indian territory. Both nations are suspicious of each other and enhanced military infrastructure along with border areas. China has expressed concern about the Indian military and economic activities in the disputed south china sea.
  • Differences on various issues notwithstanding, the two countries are trying their best to resolve these issues. The leaders of both countries keep on meeting each other and have agreed to respect each other’s decisions and territories.
